Bios:

Larry Sorkin (poet), Tanja Bechtler (cellist) and Robert Teixeira (guitarist) have collaborated through The Bechtler Ensemble (https://www.bechtlerensemble.com/about) with an innovative approach to create a dialogue between poetry and music.  Together they received the 2022 Irene Blair Honeycutt Legacy Award.

Larry Sorkin is a some-of-the-time North Carolina poet, a part-time businessman and a performer of poetry with the classical music group, The Bechtler Ensemble.  He is a poet-in-residence at the Airy Knoll Arts Project and is on the faculty of Charlotte Lit. He presents community workshops exploring the connections among poetry and fine arts, dance, music and depth psychology.

Poetry didn’t come to Sorkin until his forties when he fell under the infectious influence of Robert Bly. He considers it a calling to spread the passion. He often holes up on his ridgetop overlooking the Piedmont, daydreaming into the fields and onto paper. His poetry book Uncomfortable Minds came out in 2021. (https://www.larrysorkin.com/)

Tanja Bechtler, the artistic director and founder of The Bechtler Ensemble, is an adjunct faculty member at Central Piedmont Community College.

Bechtler was a member of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for twelve years and has performed at Lincoln Center and the Spoleto Festival. Documentary films include Robert Shaw: Man of Many Voices, Double Take: The Art of Elizabeth King and In The Footsteps of Elie Wiesel, composed and recorded by Fred Story. CDs include Shade Grown by Bob and Tanja; Passage, Reflections on the Firebird which features North Carolina based composers; and Imagine a World of Harmony, Beatles arrangements for String Quartet.

She was awarded the “Woman of Achievement” by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which recognizes women for their significant contributions to the state of North Carolina. Tanja dedicates all of her music to Practice HORA Trance Sport and its youth movement.

Robert Teixeira is currently on the faculty at Queens University of Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College.

He has collaborated with award-winning guitarist, Mary Akerman, in concert appearances and in the production of the CD, Music for Two Guitars.  With continuing commitment to education, Robert has composed a set of five etudes for right-hand development and other works that are published by Clear Note Publications.

Together the husband-and-wife team “Bob and Tanja” explore music for the guitar and cello. Their CD Shade Grown represents a ten-year journey of developing new arrangements and original music for this not-so-common instrumental combination. In addition, they have also collaborated with composer David Crowe and produced and released the CD Passage in the world music group, Without Borders.
